This unanticipated finding is in opposition to the predicted electronic structure for two-coordinate systems, indicating that geometries can be more important than the Ln ion identity for dictating the magnetic ground states of low coordinate complexes; this is crucial transferable information for the construction of systems with enhanced magnetic properties.

Regulating the Supramolecular Polymerization of Fibrous Crystalline Structures in Aqueous Solution

Inspired by protein polymerizations, much progress has been made in making polymer-like supramolecular structures from small synthetic subunits through non-covalent bonds. Herein, a type of reactive regulator that facilitates the dimerization of the monomer precursors through dynamic bonds to trigger the supramolecular assembly from small molecules in an aqueous solution is described. The supramolecular structures are crystalline in nature and the reaction coupled assembly strategy can be extended to a supramolecular assembly of aromatic amide derivatives formed in-situ. The method may be instructive for the development of supramolecular nanocrystalline materials with desired physical properties.

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles elicited agro-morphological and physicochemical modifications in wheat plants to control Bipolaris sorokiniana

The current study involves the biogenesis of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) by using Moringa oleifera Lam. aqueous leaf extract for the reduction of titanium dioxide salt into TiO2 nanoparticles. The biosynthesized TiO2 nanoparticles were observed by using the UV-visible spectrophotometry, SEM, EDX and XRD analytical methods. It was confirmed that the nanoparticles are crystalline and exist in the size range of 10-100 nm. The FTIR analysis confirmed the presence of O-H (hydrogen bonding), N-H (amide), C-C (alkanes) and C-I (Iodo-stretch) functional groups responsible for the stabilization of nanoparticles. Various concentrations (20, 40, 60 and 80 mg/L) of TiO2 NPs were applied exogenously on wheat plants infected with a fungus Bipolaris sorokiniana responsible to cause spot blotch disease at different time intervals. The measurement of disease incidence and percent disease index showed the time-dependent response and 40 mg/L was reported a stable concentration of TiO2 NPs to reduce the disease severity. The effects of biosynthesized TiO2 NPs were also evaluated for agro-morphological (leaf and root surface area, plant fresh and dry weight and yield parameters), physiological (relative water content, membrane stability index and chlorophyll content) and non-enzymatic metabolites (soluble sugar, protein, soluble phenol and flavonoid content) in wheat plants under biotic stress and 40 mg/L concentration of TiO2 NPs was found to be effective to elicit modifications to reduce biotic stress. The current study highlights the significant role of biosynthesized TiO2 NPs in controlling fungal diseases of wheat plants and thus ultimately improving the quality and yield of wheat plants.

Meat quality and Raman spectroscopic characterization of Korat hybrid chicken obtained from various rearing periods

Meat quality attributes vary with chicken age. Understanding the relationship between poultry age and the quality of the meat would be beneficial for efficient poultry farming to meet market needs. The Korat hybrid chicken (KC) is a new crossbred chicken whose meat quality is distinct from that of commercial broiler (CB) chickens and has not been well characterized. In this study, we characterized the physico-chemical properties of KC meat and correlate the findings with Raman spectral data. The protein content of KC breast and thigh meat increased with age. The pH of thigh meat decreased, while the water-holding capacity of breast meat increased as the age of the chickens increased. The amount of cholesterol in breast meat decreased as the rearing period was extended. Inosine 5′-monophosphate and guanosine 5′-mono phosphate of breast meat decreased as KC grew older. The shear force values of meat from older birds increased concomitantly with an increase in total collagen. Principle component analysis revealed that the meat quality of CB was greatly different from that of KC meat. High shear force values of KC meat at 20 wk of age were well correlated with an increase in the beta-sheet structure (amide I) and amide III of collagen. Raman spectra at 3,207 cm(-1) and relative alpha-helical content were negatively correlated with shear force values of KC breast meat. These could be used as markers to evaluate KC meat quality.

Toward inert paramagnetic Ni(II)-based chemical exchange saturation transfer MRI agents

The Ni2+ complexes with hexadentate ligands containing two 6-methylpicolinamide groups linked by ethane-1,2-diamine (dedpam) or cyclohexane-1,2-diamine (chxdedpam) spacers were investigated as potential contrast agents in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The properties of the complexes were compared to that of the analogues containing 6-methylpicolinate units (dedpa(2-) and chxdedpa(2-)). The X-ray structure of the [Ni(dedpam)](2+) complex reveals a six-coordinated metal ion with a distorted octahedral environment. The protonation constants of the dedpa(2-) and dedpam ligands and the stability constants of their Ni2+ complexes were determined using pH-potentiometry and spectrophotometric titrations (25 degrees C, 0.15 M NaCl). The [Ni(dedpa)] complex (log K-NiL = 20.88(1)) was found to be considerably more stable than the corresponding amide derivative [Ni(dedpam)](2+) (log K-NiL = 14.29(2)). However, the amide derivative [Ni(chxdedpam)](2+) was found to be considerably more inert with respect to proton-assisted dissociation than the carboxylate derivative [Ni(chxdedpa)]. A detailed H-1 NMR and DFT study was conducted to assign the H-1 NMR spectra of the [Ni(chxdedpa)] and [Ni(chxdedpam)](2+) complexes. The observed H-1 NMR paramagnetic shifts were found to be dominated by the Fermi contact contribution. The amide resonances of [Ni(chxdedpam)](2+) at 91.5 and 22.2 ppm were found to provide a sizeable chemical exchange saturation transfer effect, paving the way for the development of NiCEST agents based on these rigid non-macrocyclic platforms.

Electrosynthesis of Aromatic Poly(amide-amine) Films from Triphenylamine-Based Electroactive Compounds for Electrochromic Applications

Two electropolymerizable monomers with a methoxytriphenylamine core linked via amide groups to two triphenylamine (TPA) or N-phenylcarbazole (NPC) terminal groups, namely 4,4′-bis(4-diphenylaminobenzamido)-4 ”-methoxytriphenylamine (MeOTPA-(TPA)(2)) and 4,4′-bis(4 ”-(carbazol-9-yl)benzamido)-4-methoxytriphenylamine (MeOTPA-(NPC)(2)), were synthesized and characterized by FTIR and H-1 NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and cyclic voltammetry. The electrochemical polymerization reactions of these MeOTPA-cored monomers over indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode allow the generation of electroactive poly(amide-amine) films. The electro-generated polymer films exhibited reversible redox processes and multi-colored electrochromic behaviors upon electro-oxidation, together with moderate coloration efficiency and cycling stability. The optical density changes (Delta OD) were observed in the range of 0.18-0.68 at specific absorption maxima, with the calculated coloration efficiencies of 42-123 cm(2)/C. Single-layer electrochromic devices using the electrodeposited polymer films as active layers were fabricated for the preliminary investigation of their electrochromic applications.

Functionalized SERS substrate based on silicon nanowires for rapid detection of prostate specific antigen

Owing to its high sensitivity, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is widely used in biosensing as an efficient optical transduction technique. In this work, we report the elaboration of a novel SERS-powered aptasensing substrate for the ultra-sensitive and selective detection of prostate specific antigen (PSA). The transducing SERS substrate is formed by vertically aligned silicon nanowires (SiNWs) decorated with silver nanoparticules (AgNPs). The silver nanoparticles have two purposes : a) aptamer immobilization via thiol chemistry and b) Raman signal enhancement. The presence of PSA induces the appearance of amide bond vibration modes only if the aptamer is present on the surface of SiNWs. The platform is highly sensitive, selective and specific to PSA in a wide range of concentrations from 0.1 to 20 mu g.L-1 with a detection limit of 0.1 mu g.L-1, which encompasses the blood serum range of healthy subjects and ill patients. This optical biosensor shows a great stability and it is successfully validated in human blood serum samples showing very good results.

Synthesis of thermo- and photo-responsive polysiloxanes with tunable phase separation via aza-Michael addition

Two kinds of thermo- and photo-dual-responsive polysiloxanes (DRPSs) with functional pendent groups, N-isopropyl amides and azobenzene (Azo) or salicylideneaniline (SA), were synthesized through a facile, effective, and catalyst-free aza-Michael addition of poly(aminopropylmethyl-siloxane) with N-isopropyl acrylamide and N-azobenzene acrylamide or N-salicylaldehyde acrylamide. The chemical structrures of DRPSs were systematically characterized using FT-IR, H NMR and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The as-prepared DRPSs with lower Azo or SA contents exhibited lower critical solution temperature (LCST)-type phase transition in water, which is reversible and can be controlled by temperature and UV light. The effects of Azo and SA contents on the responsive properties of DRPSs are examined in detail. The LCST decreased with the increasing Azo or SA content. Once the content of Azo or SA reached up to 5.7% or 8.2%, respectively, DRPSs could not be dissolved in water even in an ice bath. Higher values of the LCST were measured after irradiation of the polymer solutions due to the higher polarity of cis-Azo and keto-SA conformation, induced by irradiation. The differences in cloud points between the irradiated and the non-irradiated DRPS aqueous solutions increased up to 3.4 degrees C and 9.8 degrees C when combined with 3.8% Azo and 5.8% SA units, respectively.

Post-translational modification of the adeno-associated virus capsids is a poorly understood factor in the development of these viral vectors into pharmaceutical products. Here we report the extensive capsid deamidation of adeno-associated virus serotype 8 and seven other diverse adeno-associated virus serotypes, with supporting evidence from structural, biochemical, and mass spectrometry approaches. The extent of deamidation at each site depended on the vector’s age and multiple primary-sequence and three-dimensional structural factors. However, the extent of deamidation was largely independent of the vector recovery and purification conditions. We demonstrate the potential for deamidation to impact transduction activity and, moreover, correlate an early time point loss in vector activity to rapidly progressing spontaneous deamidation at several adeno-associated virus 8 asparagines. We explore mutational strategies that stabilize side-chain amides, improving vector transduction and reducing the lot-to-lot molecular variability that presents a key concern in biologics manufacturing. This study illuminates a previously unknown aspect of adeno-associated virus capsid heterogeneity and highlights its importance in the development of these vectors for gene therapy.

The direct conversion of aliphatic carboxylic acids to their dehomologated carbonyl analogues has been accomplished through photocatalytic decarboxylative oxygenation. This transformation is applicable to an array of carboxylic acid motifs, producing ketones, aldehydes, and amides in excellent yields.
