The first example of a ruthenium-catalyzed C-H bond alkylation via six-membered ruthenacycles is presented. This work deals with evaluating the role of starch derivatives on enhancing the performance of carbon xerogels (XACs), as HCHO-scavenger in producing environmentally friendly urea-formaldehyde (UF)- agro-based composites. In this respect, polyvinyl alcohol and amide modified starch (PVA-ST and AM-ST) were used. The XACs examined in hybrid scavengers were prepared from different aldehydes-based xerogels; while the substrates used for production of Agro-composites were rice straw (RS) and sugar cane bagasse (SCB). The results showed that, the hybrid scavenger led to increase the thermal stability of UF, as well as it provided acceptable UF adhesive system for producing environmental performance and highest strength agro-composites. Where, it produced bagasse composite with static bending properties 27.2 MPa MOR, 5734 MPa MOE and 0.87 MPa IB. The static bending values exceeded the requirements for class H-3 (ANSI Standard). The corresponding free formaldehyde value was reached to 9.5 mg/100 gin sample (reduction 66.7%).

Soluble oligomers of the amyloid-beta(1-42) (A beta 42) peptide, widely considered to be among the relevant neurotoxic species involved in Alzheimer’s disease, were characterized with a combination of biochemical and biophysical methods. Homogeneous and stable A beta 42 oligomers were prepared by treating monomeric solutions of the peptide with detergents. The prepared oligomeric solutions were analyzed with blue native and sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, as well as with infrared (IR) spectroscopy. The IR spectra indicated a well-defined beta-sheet structure of the prepared oligomers. We also found a relationship between the size/molecular weight of the A beta 42 oligomers and their IR spectra: The position of the main amide I’ band of the peptide backbone correlated with oligomer size, with larger oligomers being associated with lower wavenumbers. This relationship explained the time-dependent band shift observed in time-resolved IR studies of A beta 42 aggregation in the absence of detergents, during which the oligomer size increased. In addition, the bandwidth of the main IR band in the amide I’ region was found to become narrower with time in our time-resolved aggregation experiments, indicating a more homogeneous absorption of the beta-sheets of the oligomers after several hours of aggregation. This is predominantly due to the consumption of smaller oligomers in the aggregation process.

A reversible confinement of ionic liquid (IL) among the amide segments has been carried out for the preparation of high-modulus and high-strength aliphatic semicrystalline nylon 6 fibers. In this research work, the suppression or the weakening of the hydrogen bonds during the conventional low-speed melt spinning process is followed by a hot-drawing stage and a subsequent IL extraction of the IL out of the 2% wt IL-confined fibers and an immediate thermal stabilization process for the improvement of the properties of the pristine nylon 6 fibers. The resulted crystal structural developments of the IL-confined fibers are attributed to ultimate molecular orientations, which have contributed to the developments of the overall fiber properties. Here, the influences of the IL on the gamma and the a crystal phases, the gamma-alpha transition, the morphological properties, and the tensile properties are investigated. The FTIR reported, experimentally, additional peaks at 1237 cm(-1) for the gamma crystal phase and at 1417 and 1476 cm(-1) for the a crystal phase, in conformity with the theoretical computations. The XRD demonstrated that the conventional low-speed melt spinning can successfully be used to prepare as-spun IL-confined fibers having highly improved properties. The so prepared asspun IL-confined fibers are found to have a gamma phase structure that has a small crystal size and high crystal perfections. Fortunately, the gamma-to-alpha crystal phase transition for the IL-confined nylon 6 fibers can be acquired during the hot-drawing stage (stress-induced phase transformation). Furthermore, the IL extraction process followed by a thermal stabilization process, interestingly, has led to significant increases in both of the tensile strengths and the tensile moduli of the reverted nylon 6 fibers. The values that are found are 8.46 cN/dtex for the tensile strength and 39.09 cN/dtex for the tensile modulus. The structure-property relationships between the IL-confined and the reverted nylon 6 fibers have also been discussed.

Two tridendate pyridine-amide ligands in di-deprotonated form have been used to synthesize new titanium and zirconium complexes. The molecular structure of pentafluoro containing Titanium and Zirconium complexes were determined by DFT calculations. These new metal complexes have been further evaluated for ethylene polymerization activity in the presence of co-catalyst methylaluminoxane (MAO) under atmospheric pressure, producing polyethylenes with moderate molecular weights and unimodal molecular weight distribution. Remarkably, zirconium complexes show higher activity than titanium complexes under the same polymerization condition. The catalytic activity of all the complexes were found to be temperature dependent and reach their highest efficiency at 70 degrees C. The influence of the nature of the ligands and reaction parameters upon the catalytic activities has been studied. Additionally, the pentafluoro containing Zirconium and Titanium complexes were further evaluated for the copolymerization of ethylene and propylene and exhibited good catalytic activity. Alginate is an abundant natural polysaccharide widely utilized in various biomedical applications. Alginate also possesses numerous hydroxyl and carboxylate functional groups that allow chemical modifications to introduce different functionalities. However, it is difficult to apply various chemical reactions to alginate due to limited solubility in organic solvents. Herein, functional moieties for radical polymerization and cell adhesion were separately conjugated to hydroxyl and carboxylate groups of alginate, respectively, in order to independently control the crosslinking density and cell adhesive properties of hydrogels. Sodium counterions of alginate are first substituted with tetrabutylammonium ions to facilitate the dissolution in an organic solvent, followed by in situ conjugations of (1) cell adhesion molecules (CAM) via carbodiimide-mediated amide formation and (2) methacrylate via ring-opening nucleophilic reaction. The resulting CAM-linked methacrylic alginate was able to not only crosslink different monomers to form hydrogels with varying mechanical properties, but also induce stable cell adhesion to the hydrogels.
