This paper investigates the correlation between fatigue performance and static tensile behavior of fiber reinforced rubber materials and presents change of fiber reinforced effect during fatigue process. A rough aramid fiber (AF) surface, which is helpful for combining AF and rubber matrix, was achieved by etching AF in NaOH/CH3CH2OH solution via the hydrolysis of amide bonds on the fiber. Then, the treated fiber was coated with an epoxy-functionalized silane (gamma-propyltrimethoxysilane, KH560) and was used to prepare AF/carbon black/styrene-butadiene rubber (AF/CB/SBR) composites. The results showed that the interfacial adhesion between the complex-modified AF and the rubber matrix was further enhanced and the mechanical properties of the composite were further improved compared with those of the composite which was prepared by unhydrolyzed AF coated with KH560. The hysteresis reinforcing effect of the fiber was found after 30,000 cycles of strain-controlled fatigue, and the reinforcing effect of AF was reduced with increasing average fatigue strain. Moreover, the relative debonding energy (RDE) was calculated to evaluate the reinforcing effect of the fiber, and the RDE value sharply decreased after 30,000 cycles of strain-controlled fatigue. When the AF was treated with the NaOH/CH3CH2OH solution and then coated with KH560, the rubber composite had a high RDE value, and the fatigue life of the composite under the stress-control condition was increased approximately 4 times. The results from the characterization of the fracture appearance after 30,000 cycles of fatigue showed that the composite with the complex-modified AF could maintain better interface bonding during the fatigue process.

To seek more efficient and lower toxicity anticancer compounds, several imidazole combining dehydroabietylamine derivatives including organic salts (L-1-L-2) and amides (L-3-L-5) were synthesized. Their antineoplastic activity against HeLa (cervix), MCF-7 (breast), A549 (lung) and HepG2 (liver) cells and HUVECs (umbilical vein, normal cells) in vitro were evaluated by MTT assay. The results unequivocally showed that nearly all compounds had better antineoplastic activity and lower toxicity than dehydroabietylamine (L-0). For MCF-7 cells, L-2 (0.75 M) and L-5 (2.17 M) had higher anti-MCF-7 activity than L-0 and DOX. For A549 cells, L-1 (1.85 M) and L-2 (4.37 M) had higher anti-A549 activity than L-0; in particular, the IC50 value of L-1 was much lower than that of DOX. Among these investigated compounds, L-2 and L-5 had lower IC50 values (0.75 M and 2.17 M) against MCF-7 cells and lower toxicity, which suggested that they may be potential future anticancer drugs. In addition, L-1 and L-2 could suppress cancer cell proliferation by inducing apoptosis. L-1-L-5 could bind with DNA through intercalation.

Anti-IL-1 beta antibody was utilized as a biorecognition molecule that immobilized onto carboxyl groups of 6-phosphohexanoic acid (PHA) via amide bond. Selective interaction between anti-IL-1 beta antibodies and IL-1 beta antigens was investigated by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) and Single Frequency Impedance (SFI) methods. The surface characterization of the immunosensor was performed by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), SEM-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) in order to illustrate individual steps of biosensor construction. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the change in impedance was proportional to IL-1 beta concentrations in the range of 0.025-3 pg/mL (R-2 = 0.99) with detection limit of 7.5 fg/mL. The reproducibility, repeatability, stability, and specificity of the developed immunosensor were analyzed. In addition, the developed immunosensor was successfully utilized for the determination of IL-1 beta in serum and saliva samples by using the standard addition method with recoveries of 96.7-105.4%. Their mechanical impact has long been debated in short plant fibre thermoplastic composites. Are they solely a filling agent or on the contrary, have they a potential of reinforcement in such composites depending on their numbers, their length and aspect ratio? This work proposes an original experimental approach to explore the mechanical role of fine flax particles. Based on controlled milling of an initially homogeneous flax fibre batch that provides a population of fines (99% under 200 mu m, average Lw of 147 mu m), we devised a set of composites made of an increasing content of flax fines (0, 3.1, 5.6, 12.3, 20.4, 34.6 and 40.2%. vol) mixed with poly(propylene) (PP) and maleic anhydrid grafted PP (PP-PPgMA). Reference composites reinforced with chalk and also with cut flax fibre (Lw of 2000 Fun) were also manufactured and studied. Results demonstrate that, despite a low aspect ratio (5 +/- 0.2 for 20.4%-vol), fines can act more than as just a simple filler, a slight modulus reinforcement is depicted but only beyond a high threshold of about 20%-vol (+29% compared to raw PP for 20.4%-vol). In addition to PP, we then investigated the mechanical influence of the flax fines in two representative matrix thermoplastic families Poly(amide)-11 (PA11) and poly(butylene-succinate) (PBS). We highlighted an increase of the Young’s modulus of PA11 and PBS fines composites (+41% and +115, respectively for 20.4%-vol), whereas strengths were lower compared to the respective neat polymers, exhibiting the possible negative role of fines on composite mechanical properties.

Selective methyl labeling is an extremely powerful approach to study the structure, dynamics and function of biomolecules by NMR. Typically, NOESY crosspeak patterns are manually correlated to the available crystal structure or an in silico template model of the protein. Here, we propose methyl assignment by graphing inference construct, an exhaustive search algorithm with no peak network definition requirement. In order to overcome the combinatorial problem, the exhaustive search is performed locally, i.e. for a small number of methyls connected through-space according to experimental 3D methyl NOESY data. The local network approach drastically reduces the search space. Only the best local assignments are combined to provide the final output. Assignments that match the data with comparable scores are made available to the user for cross-validation by additional experiments such as methyl-amide NOEs. Several NMR datasets for proteins in the 25-50 kDa range were used during development and for performance evaluation against the manually assigned data. We show that the algorithm is robust, reliable and greatly speeds up the methyl assignment task.

Multicomponent reactions (MCRs) are powerful tool for the construction of polyfunctional molecules in an operationally simple and atom-economic manner, and the discovery of novel MCRs requests various building blocks.
