A series of novel 1,3-benzodioxole-2,2-dicarboxylic acid derivatives were synthesized from arylamides and pyrocatechol through a ten-step process and the target compounds were screened in a cell-based transient transactivation assay against human peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-δ (PPARδ). Five new Schiff base ligands and conformationally rigid half-sandwich organo ruthenium(II) Schiff base complexes (15) with the general formula [Ru(η6-p-cymene)(Cl)(L1-5)] (where, L = mono anionic Schiff base ligands) have been synthesized from the reaction of [{(η6-p-cymene)RuCl}2(μ-Cl)2] with a bidentate Schiff bases ligands. These ruthenium(II) Schiff base complexes were fully characterized by elemental anal., FT-IR, UV-Vis, 1H & 13C NMR and mass spectroscopy studies. In chloroform solution, all the metal complexes exhibit characteristic metal to ligand charge transfer bands (MLCT) and emission bands in the visible region. The crystal structure of the complexes [Ru(η6-p-cymene)(Cl)(L1)] (1) and [Ru(η6-p-cymene)(Cl)(L3)] (3) were determined by single crystal x-ray crystallog. The complexes exhibited good catalytic activity for aldehydes to amides by one-pot conversion process in the presence of NaHCO3/NH2OH·HCl.

The applied multiple linear regression approach (ordinary least squares) is based on theor. mol. descriptor variety (1D, 2D, and 3D, from DRAGON package, and some calculated logP). The best combination of modeling descriptors was selected by the Genetic Algorithm-Variable Subset Selection procedure. The robustness and the predictive performance of the proposed models was verified using both internal (cross-validation by LOO, bootstrap, Y-scrambling) and external statistical validations (by splitting the original data set into training and validation sets by Kohonen-artificial neural networks (K-ANN)). The model applicability domain (AD) was checked by the leverage approach to verify prediction reliability.

A new LC-MS-MS method for anal. of rainwater was developed and validated for 53 pesticides, degradation products of pesticides and selected nitrophenols. The method was used to monitor the concentration of pesticides in rainwater at one location near Roskilde, Denmark from Feb. 2000 to August 2000. Sampling was done in periods of up to 4 wk using a cooled wet-only sampler. H2O samples were extracted by solid-phase extraction on Oasis HLB columns. The anal. of the extracts was performed by LC-MS-MS with electrospray ionization. All samples were analyzed in neg. and in pos. ionization mode, resp. for acidic and neutral compounds All analyses were done in the selected reaction monitoring mode to obtain a better signal-to-noise ratio. The method was validated for the following parameters: recovery, detection limit, uncertainty and linearity. Atrazine, terbuthylazine, isoproturon, mechlorprop and (2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxy)acetic acid were measured at concentrations >0.100 μg/l, mainly during the period of agricultural use. Nitrophenols were measured at high concentrations all year with peaks in the cold season (Feb.-Mar.).

Structure-activity relationships for aquatic toxicity were studied using neural networks and linear regression anal. The structural features contributing to toxicity were identified in mols. exhibiting a level of toxicity greater than that of non-reactive organic mols. A neural network was trained for the toxicity of non-polar narcotics, polar narcotics, or reactive toxicants. Quant. structure-activity relationships (QSARs) were developed, relating a mol. aquatic toxicity to its log P and to a set of 16 structural descriptors based upon the presence of selected structural features. The inclusion of these structural descriptors into a QSAR was found to enhance the correlation of the equation, and thus to improve its ability for predicting aquatic toxicity.
