Effects of peracetic acid on aromatic polyamide nanofiltration membranes: a comparative study with chlorine

Peracetic acid (PAA) is being considered as a disinfectant in membrane-based wastewater reuse systems, but its compatibility with polyamide membranes has not been thoroughly investigated. In this work, we showed that PAA induced much less change in the performance and material characteristics of NF90 membranes than the traditional disinfectant free chlorine (NaOCl). The change in membrane water flux and the rejection of salt and neutral organic compounds after PAA exposure (1-180 g h L-1) is significantly less than that resulting from NaOCl exposure at levels as low as 1 g h L-1. The presence of two wastewater constituents, chloride or Fe(ii), did not significantly impact membrane performance upon exposure to PAA. Surface characterization showed that oxygen was incorporated into polyamide by PAA, some of which was attributed to the formation of carboxylic acid groups. Experiments using a model aromatic amide, benzanilide, indicated an unexpected role of PAA in protecting the membrane from radicals formed by Fe(ii) and the H2O2 present in commercial PAA formulations. Furthermore, product identification suggests that both amide bond breakage and ring oxidation are possible reaction mechanisms for PAA. Our findings support that PAA is a viable disinfectant candidate for wastewater reuse and warrants further evaluation.

Effect of Growth Hormone (GH) and Resistance Training on the Collagen Properties of Femoral Bone Tissue

The indiscriminate use of anabolic steroids in gyms has been growing in a generalized way, among which, the most common is growth hormone (GH). In the short term GH may potentiate muscle growth, especially when taken in combination with resistance training. However, the effects of this hormone are not yet fully understood in the literature, especially in relation to collagen properties. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the application of growth hormone (GH) and resistance training (RT) on the collagen properties of femoral bone tissue using Raman Spectroscopy. In this study 40 male rats were randomly distributed into four groups (n=10): control (C), control and GH application (GH), resistance training (T), and resistance training and GH application (GHT). The training consisted of four series of 10 water jumps, performed three times a week, with an overload corresponding to 50 % of body weight and duration of four weeks. GH was applied at a dosage of 0.2 IU/Kg (0.067 mg/kg) to each animal, three times a week, every other day. The animals were euthanized and the right femurs were collected for analysis of bone structure. Raman spectroscopy (RS) was used to observe the following compounds from their respective bands: type I collagen (662 cm(-1)), amide III (1243 cm(-1)), proteins including type I collagen (1278 cm(-1)), woven collagen (1322 cm(-1)), association of collagen, phospholipids, nucleic acid, and phosphate (1330 cm(-1)), and collagen and protein deformation (1448 cm(-1)). The results demonstrated an increase in the collagen properties in all analyzed variables, however, the T group presented a statistically significant difference (p<0.05). It is possible to conclude that isolated physical training was shown to be more efficient than when combined with the application of GH to increase the collagen properties of the femoral bone tissue. Balanced chemical reaction does not necessarily reveal either the individual elementary reactions by which a reaction occurs or its rate law. Synthesis and anion recognition studies of new oligomethylene bis(nitrophenylureylbenzamide) receptors

A new series of oligomethylene bis(nitrophenylureylbenzamide) receptors were synthesized varying the relative position of the urea and amide groups (ortho4 and meta8) and the length of the oligomethylene chain (C-2 to C-8). An anion recognition study was performed with TBAX salts (X = AcO-, BzO(-), F-, H2PO4-, and HP2O73-) by UV-vis and H-1 NMR. The flexibility of these receptors allows a cooperative effect of both ureylbenzamide units in the receptors. Noteworthy, the ortho position favored the 1 : 1 stoichiometry in the complexes with the carboxylates. The formation of 2 : 1 receptor-anion complexes with both types of receptors 4 and 8 and with hydrogen pyrophosphate and high log K values obtained were very significant in this work. The NMR studies evidenced the formation of supramolecular complexes, even in a competitive solvent, such as DMSO.

Biosorption isotherm study of Cd2+ Pb2+ and Zn2+ biosorption onto marine bacterium Pseudoalteromonas sp SCSE709-6 in multiple systems

To overcome the low efficiency and prerequisites conditions of simultaneous metals removal and the unsuitability of single metal adsorption isotherm models in multiple metals, the multiple biosorption of Cd2+, Pb2+ and Zn2+ onto a new marine Pseudoalteromonas sp. SCSE709-6 from aqueous solution was studied and compared with single metal system. Results showed that Pseudoalteromonas sp. SCSE709-6 was a competitive biosorbent for metals from aqueous solutions in single system (maximum adsorption capacity: 138 mmol g(-1) for Cd2+, 1.05 mmol g(-1) for Pb2+ and 0.91 mmol g(-1) for Zn2+, respectively). The affinity between metals and biosorbent calculated by the separation factor in binary metals systems followed the order: Pb2+ > Cd2+ > Zn2+. In multiple metals systems, Cd2+ biosorption was the most sensitive, while Pb2+ biosorption was the least sensitive. In addition, Pb2+ biosorption had less pH dependence than the biosorption of Cd2+ and Zn-2. Among six isotherm models applied in this study, the extended Freundlich isotherm model best described the binary metal biosorption behaviors. Isotherm analysis revealed that binary biosorption was a complex process which occurred both mono- and multi-layer biosorption. FT-IR result spectrum revealed that carboxyl, amide, acyl and hydroxyl played a significant role in metals biosorption. This study showed superior performance of metal removal by Pseudoalteromonas sp. SCSE709-6 in multiple metals systems. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Effect of Spacer Length between Phenyl Pendant and Backbone in Comb Copolymers on Flow Ability of Waxy Oil with Asphaltenes

Waxy crude oil containing large amounts of paraffins often results in various difficulties in extraction and transportation, especially at low temperature. Comb-type copolymers with phenyl pendants were found to be able to improve the flow ability of waxy oils effectively. To investigate the influence of spacer length between phenyl pendant and polymer backbone in comb copolymers on the flow ability of waxy oil, poly(alpha-octadecene-co-maleic acid phenyl alkyl amide)s with various spacer lengths were synthesized by modification of poly(alpha-octadecene-co-maleic anhydride) with aniline, phenethylamine, phentermine, and phenyl-undecanoicamide. Their effects on the morphology and crystallization of model and crude oils were observed by polarized light microscopy and DSC. The flow ability of both oils in the presence of copolymers was studied by means of rheology, including measuring yield stress, viscosity, and thixotropic properties. It is found that the spacer length remarkably affects the rheology and wax crystallization behaviors for both oils. The copolymer with a longer spacer can provide better flexibility of phenyl pendants to disperse asphaltenes more effectively, and the long spacer can cocrystallize with long-chain paraffins.

Caffeic Acid Alkyl Amide Derivatives Ameliorate Oxidative Stress and Modulate ERK1/2 and AKT Signaling Pathways in a Rat Model of Diabetic Retinopathy

The purpose of this study was to examine the neuroprotective effects of caffeic acid hexyl (CAF6) and dodecyl (CAF12) amide derivatives on the early stage of retinopathy in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Animals were divided in five groups (n=8/group); one group consisted of non-diabetic rats as control, while the other four were diabetic animals either non-treated or treated with CAF6, CAF12 or resveratrol intravitreally for four weeks. Retinal superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and 8-iso-prostaglandin F-2 alpha (iPF(2 alpha)) levels were evaluated by an ELISA assay. Phosphorylation of ERK1/2 and AKT was determined by immunoblotting in retinal homogenates. Retinal morphology was also examined using light microscopy. Treatment with CAF6 and CAF12 increased retinal SOD activity, while it decreased iPF(2 alpha) levels in diabetic rats. Phosphorylation of ERK1/2 was increased, while AKT phosphorylation was decreased in diabetic rats compared to normal control and these alterations were significantly reversed in diabetic rats treated with CAF6 and CAF12. Furthermore, thickness of the whole retinal layer, outer nuclear layer, and ganglion cell count were decreased in diabetic rats compared to control and CAF6 and CAF12 treatments prevented these changes. CAF6 and CAF12 seem to be effective agents for treatment of diabetic retinopathy via attenuation of retinal oxidative stress and improvement of neuronal survival signaling.

Structure-Activity Relationships of New Natural Product-Based Diaryloxazoles with Selective Activity against Androgen Receptor-Positive Breast Cancer Cells

Targeted therapies for ER+/PR+ and HER2-amplified breast cancers have improved patient survival, but there are no therapies for triple negative breast cancers (TNBC) that lack expression of estrogen and progesterone receptors (ER/PR), or amplification or overexpression of HER2. Gene expression profiling of TNBC has identified molecular subtypes and representative cell lines. An extract of the Texas native plant Amyris texana was found to have selective activity against MDA-MB-453 cells, a model of the luminal androgen receptor (LAR) subtype of TNBC. Bioassay-guided fractionation identified two oxazole natural products with selective activity against this cell line. Conducted analog synthesis and structure activity relationship studies provided analogs with more potent and selective activity against two LAR. subtype cell line models, culminating in the discovery of compound 30 (CIDD-0067106). Lead compounds discovered have potent and selective antiproliferative activities, and mechanisms of action studies show they inhibit the activity of the mTORC1 pathway.
