Intermediate 1: 2-Methylpropanethioamide; A solution of 2-methylpropanamide (6.53 g, 75.0 mmol) and 2,4-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-1,3-dithia-2,4-diphosphetane-2,4-disulfide (15.17 g, 37.51 mmol) in THF (100 mL) was heated to reflux for 4 h. The organic fractions were combined, dried over Na2SO4, filtered, and concentrated. Purification by flash column chromatography (20% EtOAc:hexanes) afforded 4.77 g (62%) of the title compound. 1H-NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) delta 7.63 (brs, 1H), 6.90 (brs, 1H), 2.88 (m, 1H), and 1.27 (d, 6H, J=6.8 Hz).
