The organic layer was dried (magnesium sulfate), filtered, evaporated and purified by chromatography on flash silica gel, eluting with 15% ethyl acetate/hexane to give 4-chloromethyl-thiazole-2-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (4.0 g, 37%) as an orange oil. 1HNMR (CDCl3): 6 7.64 (s, 1H), 4.78 (s, 2H), 4.51 (q, J=7.0 Hz, 2H), 1.46 (t, J=7.0 Hz, 3H).
